Is the Thiruvathirai Star Dying? The Facts About Betelgeuse

In early 2020, a message spread quickly on WhatsApp groups across Tamil Nadu: "Thiruvathirai nakshatra is dying. Scientists say it will explode. People born in Thiruvathirai and Mithuna rasi will be affected." Some people called astrologers in a panic. Some even asked whether they should perform special parihara.

Years later, the star is still there. So what actually happened, and does it have anything to do with your horoscope? Let's separate the science from the rumours.

Which Star Is Thiruvathirai?

In Indian astronomy, Ardra (Thiruvathirai) is linked with the bright red star that Western astronomers call Betelgeuse. It sits at the shoulder of the constellation Orion, easy to see in the winter sky as an orange-red point of light. Tamil tradition associates the star with Lord Shiva, and Arudra Darshan in Margazhi, celebrated grandly at the Chidambaram Nataraja temple, is held on the day of Thiruvathirai.

What Happened in 2019–2020

From late 2019 to February 2020, Betelgeuse dimmed dramatically. At its faintest it was only about a third of its usual brightness, enough to notice with the naked eye. Astronomers called it the "Great Dimming". Because Betelgeuse is a red supergiant near the end of its life, some news reports speculated it might be about to explode as a supernova.

That speculation is where the WhatsApp rumours started.

What Scientists Found

Studies using the Hubble Space Telescope and the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, published in 2020–2021, explained the dimming:

  • The star ejected a large bubble of gas from its surface.
  • That gas cooled and formed a cloud of dust, which blocked part of the star's light from our view.
  • A cooler patch on the star's surface added to the effect.

By mid-2020 the star had returned to its normal brightness. Betelgeuse also varies in brightness regularly, over cycles of about 400 days and a longer cycle of several years. That is its normal behaviour.

Will It Ever Explode?

Yes, someday. Betelgeuse is expected to become a supernova, but astronomers estimate that could be anywhere up to about 100,000 years from now. When it does happen it will be a spectacular sight. It may shine brightly enough to be visible during the day for weeks. It is far too far away, roughly 500 to 700 light years, to harm Earth.

Does It Affect People Born in Thiruvathirai?

No. This is the most important point. In Vedic astrology a nakshatra is not just the physical star. It is a fixed 13°20' segment of the zodiac. Thiruvathirai covers 6°40' to 20°00' of Mithuna (Gemini). The star Betelgeuse is the traditional marker (yogatara) for that segment, but birth-star calculations depend on where the Moon was in that segment of the sky, not on how bright the marker star is.

Even if Betelgeuse disappeared tomorrow, Thiruvathirai would remain a nakshatra. Its ruling planet (Rahu), its deity (Rudra) and its qualities would be unchanged. No parihara is needed for a star's brightness.

Why Rumours Like This Spread

Real astronomy and real tradition are both fascinating. Rumours spread when they get mixed carelessly: a true science story ("the star dimmed") plus a false conclusion ("so your birth star is ending"). Before forwarding such messages, ask two questions: which scientist or institution actually said this, and does it change how a nakshatra is calculated? Usually the answers are "none" and "no".

About Thiruvathirai Natives

People born in Thiruvathirai are known for sharp intellect, a questioning mind and the ability to rebuild after upheaval. The star's symbol is a teardrop, and its theme is transformation: storms that clear the air. Ruled by Rahu, it gives strong ability in technology, research and communication. In the Vimshottari system, Thiruvathirai natives begin life in Rahu dasha. Our Rahu Mahadasha guide explains what that period brings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Thiruvathirai star dying?

Not in any way that matters to us. The 2019–2020 dimming was caused by dust, and the star recovered. A supernova is possible only on astronomical timescales.

Do Mithuna rasi people need any remedy?

No. Rasi and nakshatra calculations are based on zodiac segments, not on the brightness of individual stars.

When is Arudra Darshan?

It falls in Margazhi on the day the Moon is in Thiruvathirai, usually around the full moon. Check our panchangam for the date.
