Rudraksha means "the tears of Rudra". The legend says the beads grew from tears Lord Shiva shed after long meditation for the good of the world. For Shaivites in Tamil Nadu, a rudraksha mala is a daily companion, used for japa and worn as a sign of devotion. Today it has also become a business, and with that comes confusion: which "mukhi" should you wear, how much should you pay, and how do you avoid fakes?

This guide covers all three questions in plain language.

What Is a Mukhi?

The natural lines running from top to bottom on a rudraksha bead are called mukhis (faces, in Tamil mugam). A bead with five lines is a five-mukhi rudraksha. Beads from one to twenty-one mukhis exist, but five-mukhi beads are by far the most common, and beads above fourteen are very rare.

Planetary associations differ between traditions; some Tamil texts map the beads differently. The deity associations are more consistent. If you want a bead for a particular planet in your chart, discuss it with an astrologer who has seen your horoscope.

Which One Should You Start With?

If you are not sure, start with a five-mukhi rudraksha. It is the traditional choice for daily wear and japa, it is safe for everyone (men, women, students, elders) and it is affordable. A full japa mala has 108 beads plus one guru bead (the meru).

How to Spot a Fake

Rare beads (1, 14, 15 and above) are widely faked by carving extra lines, joining two beads together or moulding resin. Simple checks:

  • Price sense: a genuine one-mukhi bead is extremely rare. If someone offers one cheaply, it is almost certainly not genuine.
  • Look at the lines: natural lines run continuously from the top hole to the bottom hole. Carved lines often look sharp, shallow or uneven.
  • Ask for a lab certificate for any high-value bead. X-ray testing shows the internal seed compartments, which should match the number of lines.
  • The "sinks in water" test is unreliable. Both real and fake beads can sink or float.
  • Buy from established temple shops or certified sellers, not from roadside or online sellers making big promises.

How to Wear It

  1. Wash the bead or mala in clean water, then a little milk, then water again.
  2. Apply a little vibhuti or sandal paste.
  3. On a Monday, or on Pradosham or Shivaratri, chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times holding the mala.
  4. Wear it on a cotton or silk thread, or a silver or gold chain.

Many people remove the mala while sleeping, bathing and during funerals; some traditions allow continuous wear. Keep it clean and oil it lightly every few months so the bead doesn't dry and crack.

Rudraksha and Sphatika

Rudraksha is considered warm and energising, linked with Shiva's tapas. Sphatika (clear quartz) is considered cooling and calming, linked with Saraswati and Lakshmi. Some people wear a combined mala of both. Choose by temperament: rudraksha if you need energy and focus, sphatika if you need calm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can women wear rudraksha?

Yes. There is no scriptural restriction. Many women wear and use rudraksha for japa.

Does rudraksha cure illness?

Rudraksha is a spiritual aid. Some people find it helps with calm and focus, but it is not a medical treatment. Please see a doctor for health concerns.

How much should a five-mukhi mala cost?

Ordinary five-mukhi malas are inexpensive. Prices rise with bead size, origin and certification. Be wary of anyone charging very high prices for common beads.
