Few words cause as much worry in a Tamil household as "dosham". A marriage proposal stalls, someone says "the girl has chevvai dosham", and suddenly the whole family is anxious. We have seen good alliances dropped for reasons that a careful reading would not support.

This guide explains the doshas you are most likely to hear about: what each one actually means, the exceptions that are often ignored, and the traditional remedies. The aim is to replace fear with understanding.

First, What Is a Dosham?

A dosham is a placement in the chart that classical astrology considers a weak point for a particular area of life, usually marriage, children or family harmony. It is not a curse and it is not a sentence. Almost every chart has some dosha. The real questions are how strong it is, whether it is cancelled, and when it becomes active.

Chevvai Dosham (Mangal Dosham)

Formation: Mars placed in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. The Tamil tradition counts it from the lagna, from the Moon and from Venus. North Indian practice usually uses the 1st instead of the 2nd.

What it suggests: Mars is energy and heat. In these houses it can bring friction in family life, arguments with a spouse or impulsive decisions about money or property.

Common exceptions: Traditional texts list many exceptions, including:

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exaltation sign (Capricorn).
  • Mars aspected by or joined with Jupiter.
  • Mars in the 2nd house in Gemini or Virgo, or in the 12th house in Taurus or Libra (rules vary by text).
  • Both partners having chevvai dosham of similar strength. This is the most widely used rule in Tamil marriage matching.

Because of these exceptions, a large share of charts that are first labelled "chevvai dosham" turn out to have a mild or cancelled dosha on closer reading.

Traditional remedies: Worship of Lord Murugan on Tuesdays, Durga worship during Navaratri, and a visit to Vaitheeswaran Koil, where Mars (Angaraka) has a dedicated shrine.

Kalathra Dosham

Formation: Malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu) in the 7th house, an afflicted 7th lord, or a weak Venus for men and a weak Jupiter for women.

What it suggests: Delay in marriage or adjustment issues after marriage. In many charts it simply means a later marriage, which often turns out stable.

Traditional remedies: Prayer at marriage-related temples such as Thirumananjeri, and helping with the wedding expenses of families in need.

Kala Sarpa Dosham

When all seven planets fall on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. We have a separate article on Kala Sarpa Dosham covering its twelve types and the debate about whether it is a dosha at all.

Naga Dosham (Sarpa Dosham)

Formation: Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 5th or 7th house, or with the 5th lord. It is often linked with delays in childbirth.

Traditional remedies: Worship of the Naga deity, especially on Naga Panchami. Visits to Thirunageswaram near Kumbakonam or Sri Kalahasti in Andhra Pradesh.

Pitru Dosham

Formation: The Sun (father) or the 9th house (ancestors and dharma) afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn.

What it suggests: Recurring obstacles that seem to run in a family, and difficulty completing important things on the first attempt.

Traditional remedies: Tarpanam on Amavasya, especially Thai and Aadi Amavasya. A visit to Rameswaram, and annual worship of the kula deivam.

Nadi Dosham

This one is different. It does not exist in one chart; it is a matching issue between two people. Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of three nadis. When bride and groom share the same nadi, tradition advises caution. Exceptions apply, such as both born in the same nakshatra but different rasis. Our marriage match tool checks this as part of the porutham.

A Few Honest Points

  • A dosha is not a prediction of death or divorce. Some old books use frightening language. It does not reflect how experienced astrologers read charts today.
  • Timing matters. A dosha becomes noticeable mainly in the dasha or bhukti of the planets involved.
  • Remedies are about discipline and devotion. No paid ritual removes a dosha overnight. Be wary of anyone who asks for large sums to "remove" one.
  • Two good people with mutual respect matter more than any single factor in a chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does chevvai dosham end after age 28 or 30?

This is a popular belief. Some texts do say Mars results soften with age, but there is no single fixed age in classical sources. It is better to read the full chart.

Can a person with chevvai dosham marry someone without it?

Yes, when the dosha is mild or cancelled, or when other factors in the match are strong. An experienced astrologer will weigh it in context.
