Tamil Nadu has thousands of temples, and over centuries many of them came to be known for answering particular prayers. One temple is visited by couples praying for a child, another by families looking for a match for a son or daughter, another by people worried about health or debt. These are called parihara sthalangal, temples for remedy.

Here is a practical list, grouped by purpose, of the best-known parihara temples across Tamil Nadu. We have kept to temples with a long and widely recognised tradition for each purpose.

For Longevity and Health

  • Amirthaghateswarar Temple, Thirukadaiyur (near Mayiladuthurai): famous for Shashtiabdapoorthi (60th) and Sathabhishekam (80th) celebrations, and prayers for long life. The legend of Markandeya is linked to this temple.
  • Vaitheeswaran Koil (near Sirkazhi): Shiva as the divine physician, Vaidyanathar. Also one of the Navagraha temples, for Angaraka (Mars).
  • Marundeeswarar Temple, Thiruvanmiyur (Chennai): "the lord of medicine", visited for recovery from illness.
  • Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal, Gunaseelam (near Tiruchi): traditionally visited for mental peace and recovery.

For Marriage

  • Uthvaganathar Temple, Thirumananjeri (near Kuthalam): perhaps the best-known marriage temple in Tamil Nadu. The divine wedding of Shiva and Parvati is celebrated here. Many families return with the couple after the wedding to give thanks.
  • Nithya Kalyana Perumal, Thiruvidanthai (East Coast Road, near Chennai): Perumal is said to marry daily here.
  • Kalyana Pasupatheeswarar, Karur and Thiruveezhimizhalai: also widely visited for marriage prayers.

For Children

  • Mullaivananathar and Garbharakshambigai Temple, Thirukarugavur (near Papanasam, Thanjavur district): the goddess Garbharakshambigai is worshipped for conception and safe pregnancy. Ghee blessed at the temple is a well-known offering.
  • Thayumanavar Temple, Rockfort, Tiruchi: Shiva as "the one who became a mother", prayed to for safe delivery.
  • Vijayaraghava Perumal, Thiruputkuzhi (near Kanchipuram): traditionally visited for progeny.

For Education

  • Maha Saraswathi Temple, Koothanur (near Thiruvarur): one of the very few temples dedicated solely to Saraswati. Students visit before exams, and Vijayadasami is especially crowded.
  • Devanathaswamy Temple, Thiruvahindrapuram (Cuddalore): Hayagriva, the deity of learning, has a shrine here.

For Family Harmony

  • Ardhanareeswarar Temple, Tiruchengode: Shiva as half man, half woman, a powerful image of partnership.
  • Sankaranarayanar Temple, Sankarankovil: Shiva and Vishnu in one form, a symbol of unity.
  • Lakshmi Narasimhar, Parikkal (near Villupuram): visited to resolve family disputes.
  • Vekkaliamman, Woraiyur (Tiruchi): the goddess has no roof over her sanctum; devotees write their prayers and tie them at the temple.

For Debt and Financial Difficulty

  • Sarabeswarar, Thirubhuvanam (near Kumbakonam): Sarabeswarar is worshipped for relief from troubles of every kind.
  • Karumariamman, Thiruverkadu (Chennai): very popular for relief from debts and difficulties.
  • Srinivasa Perumal, Tirumala: the legend of Lord Venkateswara repaying his wedding loan to Kubera makes Tirumala the traditional place to pray about debt.

For Land and Property

  • Bhuvaraha Swamy Temple, Srimushnam (Cuddalore district): Varaha, who lifted the earth from the ocean, is prayed to for land, houses and property disputes.

For Protection from Enemies and Fear

  • Prathyangira Devi, Ayyavadi (near Kumbakonam): famous for its Amavasya nikumbala yagam.
  • Angalamman, Melmalayanur (Villupuram district): a major Amavasya pilgrimage.
  • Masaniamman, Anaimalai (near Pollachi): known for justice. Devotees grind chillies at the temple as a petition against injustice.
  • Thillai Kali, Chidambaram.

For Ancestors (Pitru Worship)

  • Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram: the most important place in South India for tarpanam and pitru rites, with the sea at Agni Theertham.
  • Sangameswarar Temple, Bhavani: the confluence of the Bhavani and Kaveri rivers.
  • Magudeswarar Temple, Kodumudi: a Kaveri-bank shrine where Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are worshipped together.
  • Papanasam (Tirunelveli district): on the Thamirabarani, also home to the Sorimuthu Ayyanar temple.

For Graha Doshas: The Navagraha Temples

Around Kumbakonam is a circuit of nine temples, each dedicated to one planet: Suriyanar Koil (Sun), Thingalur (Moon), Vaitheeswaran Koil (Mars), Thiruvenkadu (Mercury), Alangudi (Jupiter), Kanjanur (Venus), Thirunallar (Saturn), Thirunageswaram (Rahu) and Keezhaperumpallam (Ketu). Many people visit all nine in one or two days.

Practical Tips Before You Go

  • Check timings. Many village temples close between noon and 4 pm.
  • Go on the right day if possible. Amavasya, Pradosham and the presiding deity's special day are busiest but considered most powerful.
  • Dress traditionally. Several temples enforce a dress code.
  • Use official counters. Pay for archanai and special darshan at temple counters only, and avoid touts promising "special parihara" for large sums.
  • Your own kula deivam comes first. Tradition says to seek your family deity's blessing before visiting other parihara temples.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an astrologer's advice before visiting?

No. Anyone may visit any temple. An astrologer can suggest which temple suits a particular dosha or dasha in your chart.

Does visiting a temple remove a dosha?

Traditionally, sincere worship eases the effects and gives strength to face the period. It is a support, not a guarantee.
