For people in Madurai, Chithirai is not just a month. It is the festival. Relatives come home from Chennai and abroad, the streets around the Meenakshi temple fill with stalls, and the whole city seems to be waiting for two moments: Meenakshi's wedding and Kallazhagar stepping into the Vaigai. As a Madurai-based team, we wanted to write the guide we wish every first-time visitor had.

Two Festivals in One

The Chithirai Thiruvizha is really two festivals that meet in the middle:

  • The Shaivite festival of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple: Meenakshi's coronation, her conquest and her wedding to Sundareswarar.
  • The Vaishnavite festival of Kallazhagar, Lord Vishnu of Azhagar Kovil, about 20 km away, who comes to Madurai for his sister's wedding.

Historians credit King Thirumalai Nayak (17th century) with joining the two festivals into one, timed so that farmers and devotees of both traditions would gather together. It remains one of the best examples of Shaiva-Vaishnava unity in Tamil Nadu.

The Meenakshi Festival: Key Days

The festival runs about 12 days, beginning with the flag hoisting (kodiyetram) in Chithirai month. The most important events:

  • Pattabhishekam: Meenakshi is crowned queen of Madurai and receives the sceptre. For the following months, the city is considered to be under her rule.
  • Dig Vijayam: Meenakshi sets out to conquer the eight directions, and finally meets Shiva on Kailash, where she falls in love.
  • Thirukalyanam: the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, the high point of the festival. Married women traditionally renew their thaali (mangalyam) on this day, and thousands are fed in the free wedding feast.
  • Ther Thiruvizha: the temple chariots are pulled around the Masi streets the day after the wedding.

Kallazhagar's Journey

The story goes that Kallazhagar set out from Azhagar Kovil to give his sister Meenakshi away in marriage. By the time he reached the Vaigai, the wedding was over. Disappointed, he did not enter the city; he stayed on the riverbank and returned.

The journey is re-enacted every year:

  • Ethir Sevai: Madurai's devotees go out to receive Kallazhagar as he approaches the city (traditionally at Moondrumavadi).
  • Entering the Vaigai: on Chithirai Pournami morning, Kallazhagar, on a golden horse, enters the Vaigai river. Lakhs of devotees gather on both banks. The colour of the silk he wears is watched closely. Folk belief says green silk means a good harvest year.
  • Theerthavari at Vandiyur and the Dasavatharam: over the following days, Kallazhagar appears in the ten avatars of Vishnu, and then returns to Azhagar Kovil.

Tips for Visitors

  • Check the dates every year. The festival follows the Tamil calendar, so dates move each year within April–May. The temple administration publishes the schedule well in advance.
  • Book stays early. Hotels near the temple fill up weeks before the wedding and the Vaigai day.
  • For the Thirukalyanam, passes for the temple are limited; most people watch on the large screens set up around the temple, or on live TV.
  • For Kallazhagar entering the Vaigai, arrive before dawn. The bridges and banks get very crowded, so keep children close and carry water.
  • Water sprinkling: devotees in traditional dress spray water on Kallazhagar using goatskin bags (thuruthi). Expect to get wet.
  • Heat: Chithirai is the peak of summer. Wear cotton, carry an umbrella or cap, and drink plenty of water. Buttermilk and water stalls set up by local groups are everywhere.

Astrological Significance

Chithirai is the first month of the Tamil year, when the Sun enters Mesham (Aries), its sign of exaltation. Chithirai Pournami, the full moon of the month, is traditionally associated with Chitragupta, the keeper of karma's accounts, and many people offer special prayers that day. Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Madurai Chithirai festival?

It is held in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April–May). The Thirukalyanam and Kallazhagar's entry into the Vaigai fall in the last few days before and on Chithirai Pournami.

Has the festival ever been cancelled?

Yes. In 2020 and 2021 public celebrations were suspended due to the pandemic, and the rituals were conducted within the temple without devotees. It was one of the very few interruptions in centuries.

Can visitors attend the wedding feast?

Yes. The Thirukalyana virundhu (wedding feast) is open to all and is organised by devotee groups. Expect long but well-managed queues.
