Tharai Balam and Sampathu Tharai: Picking Good Days by Your Star

Elders in Tamil homes often say "check if the star is good for you" before an interview, a property registration or a long trip. What they are usually checking is tharai balam: how today's nakshatra relates to your own birth nakshatra.

The method is simple enough to do in your head once you understand it. It is one of the most practical tools in daily astrology.

The Nine Tharais

Count from your birth star to the day's star, counting your own star as 1. Divide the result by 9 and look at the remainder (a remainder of 0 counts as 9). That number is the day's tharai for you.

No.TharaiMeaningGood for you?
1JanmaBirthMixed; avoid big new beginnings
2SampathuWealthVery good
3VipathuDangerAvoid
4KshemamWell-beingGood
5PrathyakObstacleAvoid
6SadhanaAchievementVery good
7Naidhana (Vadha)DestructionAvoid
8MitraFriendGood
9Parama MitraBest friendVery good

The cycle of nine repeats three times across the 27 nakshatras. So every tharai has three stars for you, one in each round.

A Worked Example

Suppose your birth star is Rohini (star number 4) and today's star is Hastham (star number 13). Count from Rohini to Hastham: Rohini 1, Mirugaseerisham 2, Thiruvathirai 3 ... Hastham 10. 10 divided by 9 leaves 1. That is Janma tharai, so it's not the day to start something major.

Tomorrow, if the star is Chithirai, the count is 11, the remainder is 2, and that is Sampathu tharai. Much better.

Sampathu Tharai Stars for All 27 Nakshatras

Sampathu tharai is the one people most often look for, because it is traditionally linked with gain and success. These are the 2nd, 11th and 20th stars from yours.

Tharai Balam and Chandrashtamam

Tharai balam is only one layer. A good muhurtham also looks at chandra balam (the Moon's transit from your rasi), the tithi, the weekday and Rahu Kalam. One thing to always avoid is chandrashtamam, when the Moon transits the 8th sign from your Moon sign. It lasts about two and a quarter days each month. Our daily panchangam shows today's nakshatra, tithi and Rahu Kalam so you can do this check quickly.

How We Use It in Daily Life

  • Interviews, meetings, applications: prefer Sampathu, Sadhana or Parama Mitra days.
  • Buying, registration, first payment: prefer Sampathu or Kshemam days.
  • Medical procedures (non-emergency): avoid Vipathu, Prathyak and Naidhana days where possible.
  • Emergencies: never delay. No tharai outweighs timely action or a doctor's advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Janma tharai bad?

Not bad, but sensitive. Many people prefer to rest or worship on their own star day rather than start something new.

Which is stronger, tharai balam or chandra balam?

Tradition says chandra balam (a good Moon transit) is more important. When both are good, the day is excellent.
